Led by BAFTA award-winning film maker Carol Cooke Barefoot in Business is a groundbreaking documentary campaign revealing what life is really like as a female entrepreneur in Uganda. The Challenges Group and Challenges Worldwide are delighted to be partnering with Barefoot in Business to help these inspirational African entrepreneurs turn their big ambitions into reality through the new Barefoot in Business Investment Fund. This fund delivers sustainable impact to female entrepreneurs in Uganda.
Women run businesses with the potential to attract commercial financing and impact investment funding are identified and then supported, enabling them to make use of the grant to implement the goals that will support investment readiness and therefor access to finance. Depending on the size of the business, entrepreneurs will gain access to two young business associates for a three month period who will help them to identify the sticking points within their business. With the support of expert mentors, businesses will use technology developed by Challenges to ensure regular and robust reporting of their KPIs and the opportunity to engage with interested investors.
Grants will be released in 2 stages, as the business moves through the Challenges model. A smaller Barefoot grant is made at the beginning. Then, if enterprises keep reporting and meeting agreed targets, businesses will go on benefit from Challenges’ strong relationships with banking institutions, Trade Finance Organisations and Impact Investors through a larger grant. Essentially if businesses keep reporting and meeting agreed targets, the potential to gain the necessary follow on capital requirements is likely.
For more early stage businesses, Challenges will ensure that the essence of local support by local people is maintained and businesses will be fully supported by Challenges expertise and technology.
Trade not aid is at the heart of Barefoot in Business – the support of Challenges will ensure that the investment delivers real business growth.
